Sweet Home...Chicago

Yes... this is a Chicago man-hole cover
my son, Joe took this photograph a while back

Here is Joe's Photo

Joe requested of me to please recreate the manhole cover
into a piece of wall art for his apartment,
where he now lives and works in another state.
He really misses the old stomping grounds of his college,
 and after-college years.
He has many friendships and many fun times there.
but does he want a lakefront painting or a painting of the downtown,
or a painting of the sailboats on the lake ?...No
He wants this man-hole cover - to hang on his wall
well, being the good mem-mem I am...

here is how I went about it
some of you out there are into seeing how paintings develop
what do you think of this , My
shades of grey art work

I used white chalk to place in the areas to paint to
have some what a balanced lay-out
but I wanted some irregularity and not
 perfect balance and replication.
then when the paint dries I would wipe off
all the white chalk with a wet paper towel
I toothbrush (ScoobyDoo one) splattered grey and
purple/ grey paint all around the edges

at least it doesn't smell authentic

HAH! That's awesome! I like the toothbrush method you used to give it that gritty look. I promise I wont' use it to stomp on :P Very cool! Thanks Mem!

I had to laugh about your last sentence!!! It's quite fascinating what can be turned into beautiful art - I liked to see your process and the final result. Very well done!!!

Interesting motiv! :-) Maybe it really is symbolizing the strolls around the neighborhood for your son.

Ya never know what a son wants on his walls! I enjoyed seeing your process. Funny, in my post for ppf I mentioned a painting I did for my son who also lives in Chicago.

Manhole covers are pretty cool -- especially if you're a kid. They're like portals to some subterranean imaginary world. I think your painting captures that magic.

Very funny, our manhole covers in Chicago don't smell, lol. Good job of coming up with a good picture of it. Blessings, Janet PPF

Wow I bet he'll love it!! Good job and seems like he has some good design taste too! I love that he wants things that represent who he is! It's an honor that he wants you to paint it...since he could just have the photo blown up and put on a canvas!!

Love this! And, believe it or not, man hole covers are rather popular items. There's a gentleman in Loveland who does pottery manhole covers and sells them all the time!

By the way ... Scooby-Doo toothbrushes are the best!

Keep up the grate work (hehe)
