HELP...With Identity of a Few Birds

OK
Here is a bird identity question for you all
what is this swooping large bird
it came by in a small flock
they all circled above my yard
I think eating dragonflies or gnats or some bugs
I could not find it in my bird book
I am guessing it is some kind of swallow
because of how it is flying

very long /large wingspan

white
 under wing stripe

these guys are fast fliers
I found it very hard to catch a good photo
with my simple camera anyway

I also spied a few woodpeckers
they look different from the downey woodpecker to me
is this possibly a hairy woodpecker ???
woodpecker
black wings with white stipes

two of the woodpeckers
they like swinging up from below the feeder

white / buff belly

small bit of red on top of the head

Hungry woodpecker feeding on some seeds
Let me know what you think
sorry my photos are a bit amateurish
the sun was not cooperating with me.
But...I just love watching birds
Hugs this wonderful (70's and sunny here) Monday !

those top birds eating all your bugs and swooping around i believe are common nighthawks. they're larger than swallows and have that distinctive white bar on their wing. they're similar to whipporwills in that they eat tons of insects.

your woodpecker might be a hairy - if it's slightly larger than a downy. they're so similar...

I was going to say the same as Texwisgirl above,, great photos,, thankyou for visiting today, our grandson feeds crickets to the fish as well, my daughter hates it when he drops live one s on his way to the tank,, they drive you crazy for a while until they escape back outside,, poor things,, ahhhh, food chain,, glad we're on the top!

Looks like a female hairy woodpecker. Great birds to photo, not scared when I go out with the camera. I too love watching the birds especially this month when all the hummers are getting filled up before their long flight back to Mexico. I have spent all of August outside with the camera, very relaxing.

Yep, I agree with everyone!
Lucky you to see the nighthawks! :)

The woodpecker might be a female downy. Great captures and I'm glad you are enjoying watching and taking photos of your birds. :)

Gorgeous shots and beautiful birds. I am not the gal to ask in reference to bird watching. Now my Mom on the other hand, she knows every bird and flower known to MAN. Thanks for sharing with the newbie party.

I see that you've gotten some good answers! I saw 3 nighthawks fly by my balcony last night! I was sitting there eating popcorn...good thing that's not what they like! heehee! ♥

Hi Kat, I think the first lady is right about the swallow type bird and I think you are right and they are hairy woodpeckers. We used to get both in our backyard here in Canada and we would put out suet for them and they devoured it. I miss my garden, apartment living is for the birds, forgive the pun, LOL I have recently found your blog and am now following you. Please pop on over and check out mine and perhaps you would like to follow me also. I would love that. Hugs, Chris
